The University of Tasmania: Fair Work Ombudsman enforceable undertaking
Respondent
The University of Tasmania
Facts
UTAS failed to pay casual professional staff 3-hour minimum engagements, shift penalties and other entitlements over 11 years, and did not keep accurate casual time records. Causes were poor governance and payroll deficiencies; it self-reported in 2021.
Outcome
Fair Work Ombudsman accepted an enforceable undertaking (12 December 2025). Terms include: >$21.4M back-pay to 10,443 staff; $175,000 contrition payment; two compliance audits at own cost; training; complaints mechanism; Audit and Risk Committee monitoring. An undertaking is not a finding or admission of a contravention unless the regulator says the party admitted it.
