The University of Queensland: Fair Work Ombudsman enforceable undertaking
Respondent
The University of Queensland
Facts
Payroll configuration errors and clerical oversights meant UQ breached its 2014, 2018 and 2021 enterprise agreements (minimum engagement, casual pay codes, PhD rates, unrecorded overtime) between 2017 and 2026. FWO called it the 15th university EU.
Outcome
Fair Work Ombudsman accepted an enforceable undertaking (1 September 2026). Terms include: ~ $11M owed to 16,382 staff (>$9.6M paid); $175,000 contrition payment; independent audit; mandatory supervisor training; NTEU consultation; Senate Risk and Audit Committee oversight. An undertaking is not a finding or admission of a contravention unless the regulator says the party admitted it.
