Every director of an Australian company or CATSI corporation needs a 15-digit Director Identification Number, obtained via ABRS before appointment. ASIC has commenced first enforcement actions for non-compliance.

Steps

  1. Apply NOW — Director ID must be obtained BEFORE appointment.
  2. Go to abrs.gov.au, log in with your myID (at least Standard identity strength) and complete the application.
  3. Defer formal appointment until Director ID issued.
  4. If appointment has already been formalised, application is now overdue; expect ABRS follow-up.

Deadline: your appointment date

Max penalty: Up to $1.82M civil penalty (5,000 penalty units, or 3x the benefit if greater) / $21,840 criminal fine (60 penalty units, strict liability) for not holding a Director ID
