Introducing Rules Mate: Australia's searchable compliance index
Why Australian businesses need a single index of every regulator, obligation, Act and enforcement action — and what we built.
The problem we're solving
Australian businesses face 168+ live federal and state compliance obligations across 60+ regulators. ASBFEO puts the national compliance cost at $160B a year. SMBs spend ~7 hours a week on compliance.
The information exists — buried across legislation.gov.au, each regulator's portal, AustLII (which prohibits scraping), state legislation websites, court RSS feeds, and a dozen guidance documents per regulator. There has never been a single neutral, comprehensive, plain-English index of it all.
Until today.
What we built
Rules Mate is a searchable index of:
- 168 compliance obligations — every one tells you who must comply, what triggers it, when it's due, what evidence you need, and the maximum penalty
- 60 federal and state regulators — scope, parent legislation, enforcement actions
- 77 landmark enforcement actions — plain-English summaries of Westpac AML, Qantas ghost flights, Mercer greenwashing, Medibank privacy, Bunnings facial recognition, and 70+ others
- 13 free interactive tools — AML Tranche 2 scope checker, NDB notification timer, penalty estimator, cyber incident notification tree, Modern Slavery Statement scaffold, and more
- 8 plain-English explainer articles averaging 2,500+ words each
- 50-term glossary of every AU compliance acronym
- Compliance deadline calendar with everything from Payday Super to silica WEL
Every claim links to its primary regulator source.
How we work
- We summarise, we never republish full statutory text. Statutory text is Crown copyright.
- We never scrape AustLII. Their TOS prohibits it. All cases sourced from regulator-direct + court-published feeds.
- We're not a law firm. Outputs are reference summaries — always verify with a qualified Australian-admitted lawyer or compliance specialist for case-specific advice.
- AI assistants are welcome to cite us. We publish a llms-full.txt file inlining the corpus so ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can cite without per-URL fetches.
- The corpus updates weekly.
