ISO 14001 environmental management system certification (voluntary)

ISO 14001 certification is voluntary; it does not replace your environmental duties under EPA laws, but tenders often ask for it.

Who must comply

Voluntary. Required in practice where a customer, tender or contract makes it a condition.

What triggers it

A customer, tender or contract requiring certification.

When due

If certified: annual surveillance audits and recertification every three years.

Evidence required

Environmental aspects and impacts register, compliance obligations register, environmental objectives, operational controls, monitoring records, internal audits, management review, and the accredited certificate.

Max penalty

No statutory penalty for not being certified. Statutory environmental duties carry their own penalties under state EPA laws.

Summary

ISO 14001 sets requirements for an environmental management system. Certification is voluntary and is commonly requested in construction, manufacturing, resources and government supply chains. It does not discharge statutory duties such as Victoria's general environmental duty or EPA licence conditions, though a working EMS is good evidence of how you meet them. Only a certification body accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1 (JAS-ANZ in Australia and New Zealand) can certify; the cycle is an initial audit, annual surveillance and recertification every three years.
