Summary
ISO 45001 sets requirements for an occupational health and safety management system. Certification is voluntary; the legal duty remains the primary duty of care under your WHS or OHS Act, and certification is not a defence to a WHS prosecution. A certified system is, however, strong evidence of systematic risk management and officer due diligence, and principal contractors, mining companies and government tenders frequently require it. Only a certification body accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1 (JAS-ANZ in Australia and New Zealand) can certify; the cycle is an initial audit, annual surveillance and recertification every three years.
